SINCE premiere
I’ve been working on a project with Nic de Cosson for a few years now involving sound, projection, and a CNC machine. Nic put together a six-foot by six-foot CNC machine that allows for computer control of the movements of a carriage within a two-dimensional plane. We mounted a laser pointer to the carriage and attached a canvas coated with glow-in-the-dark paint to the back of the frame. I created a Max patch that maps the contour of randomly generated melodic fragments to xy coordinates; Nic took that patch and tied it into his Max patch that generates CNC instructions. The whole thing works such that the movement of the carriage such that the CNC machine “draws” the melody as the Max patch plays it. There are additional layers of sound that fucntion as a backing track for the installed piece, which is suspended vertically from the ceiling of the gallery or studio.
We’ve entitled this project SINCE, and presented it on the opening evening of the Noiseborder Festival 2017 in Windsor.
