Into the Light

Into the Light

Into the Light is the title of a solo exhibition of works in a variety of media by Sigi Torinus; the show opened at the Art Gallery of Windsor on April 25. Into the Light is also the title of the largest work in the show, a video installation featuring images of life in Cuba in a kaleidoscopic multi-projector video spanning about 50 feet. Sigi and I have been working together on projects for many years now, and it was a pleasure to design the sound for this piece. The sound is in multiple layers: diagetic sound from the video (mixed evenly between four speakers), composed marimba motives (isolated in individual speakers), and processed percussive sound samples  (slowly rotating through the four speakers situated around the gallery space). Nicholas Papador played the marimba and other percussion instruments. All of the sound samples are triggered through a controlled random set up in Max; the overall sonic texture remains fairly static but the details are constantly shifting. The video below is from a rehearsal earlier this spring; hopefully Sigi will post some video from the AGW show soon.
